2000 Report
Unlike many California races this year, the 2nd Mt Hood PCT 50/50 started at a chilly 35 degrees and finished with a moderate 75 degrees, a very nice day for all.
Trail conditions were dusty enough to ensure the runners looked like they had been there and back. The volunteers were enthusiastic and most runners managed to stay vertical long enough to enjoy the scenic views of this portion of the PCT.
The section of the PCT that the course follows is 25 trail miles south of Mt Hood's Historic Timberline Lodge and Ski Resort. We run out of Clackamas Lake Ranger Station by Timothy Lake to the Lodge and back. The entire course is on the PCT with only the occasional road crossing and is well shaded for 47 of 50 miles. There were some complaints of the sandy soil above the treeline but you have to pay to enjoy the really good views. You 50K runners should look into what you missed.
The Old and Venerable Steve Smucker once again proved himself to be the fastest dog in the pack with a 7:27 for 50 miles. Linda Samet was top open 50 mile woman with a 9:37 finish. Richard West was top master runner with a new course record of 8:16.
The 50K women's race was very competitive again this year with 4 women breaking last year's record. Yarrow Moench from Colorado won it with a fast 4:38:28. Brian Weick won the men's open with 4:17. Chuck Dooley was 1st men's Master at 4:33 with Barbara Ringstad of Bend the 1st woman's Master at 6:12. See Barb it's true if you tap the heels of your Montrails together your dreams do come true. Thanks to all the volunteers. I didn't know I had that many family members. See Ya'll again next year and yes Soup Lady will be there with that homemade turkey noodle soup.
